The chief executive officer of a major satellite radio company has revealed that, despite discussions with Apple, the prospects of a version of the iPod capable of receiving radio are remote at present.
Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio, claimed in at a media conference in New York that he had been in discussion with Apple CEO Steve Jobs over the possibility of adding the ability to receive satellite broadcasts to the iPod. However, Karmazin claimed, the discussions had ended with no commitment from Apple. "I've spoken to Steve Jobs," said Karmazin, "and [Apple's] current thinking is that they don't need to put a satellite radio in their box."

Apple announced today it has bumped the mini's memory to 6GB (from 4), increased the battery life to a claimed 18 hours, and replaced the gold mini with a new silver model. The price cut brings the 4GB iPod mini to within $50 of the 1GB flash-based iPod shuffle, which is selling for $149 (direct).

I run a website for the local Chamber of Commerce. It is not much of a site, but the members want a business directory for visitors to know where to eat, camp, sleep, etc. I use Frontpage 2003.
Today the boss asked me about Pod-casting on the site. He would like it to be like a local radio station with news, traffic, advertising and entertainment, presumably from the local barbershop quartet.

Office Zealot is driving a lot of community involvment for Microsoft Office programmability. One of their efforts is a "pod cast". They record and interview and make it available for download. They just hosted their second one, and I happened to the be person they interviewed (don't hold that against them).

The Cupertino, Calif., computer maker's revenue in the quarter totaled $3.24 billion, compared with $1.91 billion a year earlier. Earnings came in at $290 million, or 34 cents per diluted share, topping a Thomson Financial consensus forecast of 24 cents as well as a high estimate of 30 cents. Apple reported a profit of $46 million, or 6 cents per diluted share, for its fiscal 2004 second quarter.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its second straight triple-digit decline Thursday to end at a five-month low, and the Nasdaq put in its worst performance since October 2004, on rising concern that the pace of U.S. economic growth may be slowing.

The use of Apple iPods in colleges, pioneered by Duke University, is expected to increase as the idea catches on.
Duke has modified its program, saying it will distribute the digital music players free only in classes where the teacher has requested them.
Earlier, the Durham, N.C.-based school was giving the iPods to all incoming freshmen, the USA Today reported Thursday.
